The Best Performance Modifications When Tuning the BMW M3

Embarking on the journey of tuning your BMW M3 for optimal performance is an exhilarating endeavor, but it’s essential to navigate wisely through the sea of modifications available. Top 5 Performance Modifications

  1. Software: The first most cost-effective modification to any modern turbo car is software. Software will make another 50-60 Horsepower and Torque on the M3. It is important for the software tuner to retune the ECU, AND retain all of the OEM safety limits in the tune to ensure long term durability.
  2. Heat Exchanger: Adding a heat exchanger and intercooler will make the potential gain 100 Horsepower and Torque, as well as improved durability and more consistent performance with constant use or consecutive runs.
  3. Cold Air Intake: A cold air intake can add an additional 7 horsepower and a very high-tech look from the carbon fiber under the hood.
  4. Exhaust: Exhaust will make a great sound from the exhaust and a very high-tech look from the exhaust tips. The exhaust systems are available in both Stainless Steel and Titanium material. Both sound great, however the Titanium will reduce vehicle weight by around 30 lbs over stainless steel.
  5. Suspension System: We recommend a suspension system next. A Ride height adjustable spring system with a collar and perch that retains your OEM electric dampers/shock absorbers is the best solution for a street car. In addition, we recommend upgraded toe links, front strut rod mono-balls and larger anti-roll bars to compliment the lower suspension. The combination of these items will increase grip and control, without sacrificing bump compliance or make excessive noise during use.  If you opt for adjustable anti-roll bars, they will allow you to tune the understeer-oversteer balance of your car.

Bonus: High Octane Fuel

You could opt to put 100 octane fuel in your car when you want an additional, somewhat low cost gain. One hundred octane fuel on an M3 equipped with software, heat exchanger, and/or intercooler(s) will gain an additional 10%. 

Daily Drive Considerations

The most important thing to remember when it comes to modifying your car is not to get carried away. If the car is to be driven every day, being slightly conservative on your tune is important. Also keep in mind the torque limits of the engine and drivetrain components, as they are not infinite. 

Lowering the car too much will ruin both ride and handling. The car can look just as good if you lower it a little less, while it retains all of its intended functionality. A car lowered ¾” will have improvements in handling without disturbing the ride quality. One lowered 1.5” will ride much worse, with very little gained in handling. Furthermore, the suspension can bottom out (run out of travel) potentially damaging your suspension components and making the tire-to-road contact relationship very inconsistent.

A lot of people are afraid to modify a car. This is because most modifications don’t consider the side effects and ruin the car as a whole package/machine. Being just a little conservative will make the car very enjoyable, even as a daily driver.
