S85 engines have had broken valve springs issues. CarBahn with its enormous Race engine experience has produced High performance valves made with the same materials and process as their race engine valves springs. Thes valve springs have won 3 Prototype racing championships and two 24hr of Daytona overall victories. These are the highest quality valves springs available on the market.

    Theory

The goal of a valve spring pressure is to make it as low as possible. This is because compressing a spring takes energy and robs potential power. In addition, more valve spring pressure increases valve train wear. We work very hard at running just enough valve spring pressure to keep the follower in contact with the camshaft but no more. If you increase the RPM you increase the valve spring just enough to manage the inertia from the increased RPM. The valve spring also needs enough seat pressure and the correct frequency not to bounce when the valve is closed. This is to avoid leaking trapped mass (the fuel air charge).

The S63 engine is not designed to have large increase in boost. CarBahn has designed a high-performance engine to handle very high outputs by utilizing higher quality racing components. This engine includes higher quality racing Forged Carrillo connecting rods, CP forged pistons and CarBahn high-performance valve springs, ported heads and reground crankshaft with stronger bearings. This Engine includes a complete rebuild with a valve job, timing chains, chain guides, tensioners, water pump thermostat, new bearings, seals and gaskets.

The stock high compression ratio is high for CAFÉ. (Corporate average fuel economy). However, this increased compression limits engine performance with higher boost setting by decreasing the size of the fuel air charge in the combustion chamber and by forcing the ignition timing to retard far below MBT (mean best timing). The CarBahn engine has .5 less compression to optimize the engine for the increased boost. If this an emissions legal street car the lowered compression has the added benefit of reducing catalyst inlet temperatures and improved drivability on pump gas.

Includes, Forged Rods, Forged Pistons, high performance valve springs for more boost, Ported heads, Reground crankshaft with stronger bearings, Labor and machine work for complete overhaul.

  • Stage 1 S55 High Performance Engine: F80 M3 F82 F83 M4 GTS F87 M2C

If you are planning a large power increase with bigger turbos, Carbahn Autoworks has designed a high-performance engine to handle very high outputs by pinning the cam sprocket to the crankshaft.

This Engine Incudes: Forged Carrillo Rods, Forged CP Pistons, CarBahn Pinned crankshaft, Full circle main bearing, high performance valve springs, labor and machine work to install them into the block.

    Stage 1, S55 High performance engine: F80 M3, F82 F83 M4, F87 M2C

The S55 engine is not designed to take a large increase in boost beyond the OEM spec. Due to the design of the crankshaft, it is known to have the timing chain sprocket spin on the end of the crankshaft, causing the cams to go out of time. In extreme cases, the valves can hit the pistons, causing catastrophic damage. Furthermore, the S55 only has half of a normal crankshaft thrust bearing.

To ensure durability we pin the timing chain sprocket to the crankshaft, machine the block to accommodate a full circle thrust main. In addition, we utilize higher quality racing Carrillo connecting rods and forged CP pistons and CarBahn high-performance valve springs.

The stock engine compression ratio is relatively high due to the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards which push for consistently higher fuel economy in cars and trucks. However, this increased compression limits engine performance with higher boost settings by decreasing the size of the fuel-air charge in the combustion chamber, forcing the ignition timing to retard far below MBT (mean best timing, the theoretical optimal ignition timing). Therefore, the CarBahn S55 engine has 0.5 less compression to optimize the engine for the increased boost. In an emissions-legal street car, the lowered compression has the added benefit of reducing catalyst inlet temperatures and improved drive-ability on pump gas.

The N55 engine is not designed to take a large increase in boost beyond the OEM spec. Due to the design of the crankshaft, it is known to have the timing chain sprocket spin on the end of the crankshaft, causing the cams to go out of time. In extreme cases, the valves can hit the pistons, causing catastrophic damage. Furthermore, the N55 only has half of a normal crankshaft thrust bearing. To ensure durability we pin the timing chain sprocket to the crankshaft, machine the block to accommodate a full circle thrust main. All engines are backed with a two-year warranty.

  • Stage 2 S55 High Performance Engine: F80 M3 F82 F83 M4 GTS F87 M2C

This S55 engine is designed to make for maximum power applications (over 1,000HP) CarBahn has designed a high-performance engine to handle very high outputs by pinning the cam sprocket to the crankshaft. To ensure durability we also machine the block to accommodate a full circle thrust main. In addition, we utilize higher quality racing Carrillo connecting rods, forged CP pistons, cylinder head studs, high performance valve springs, cylinder head porting and lowered compression for increased flow and high boost.

If you are planning a large power increase with bigger turbos CarBahn Autoworks has designed a high-performance engine to handle very high outputs by pinning the cam sprocket to the crankshaft. To ensure durability we also machine the block to accommodate a full circle thrust main. In addition, we utilize higher quality racing Carrillo connecting rods and forged CP pistons. The stage 2 engine also includes Cylinder head porting for increased flow at high RPM.

This Engine Includes: Forged Carrillo Rods, Forged CP Pistons, CarBahn Pined crankshaft, Full circle main bearing, high performance valve springs, labor and machine work to install them into the block.

    Stage 2, S55 High performance engine: F80 M3, F82 F83 M4, F87 M2C

We also port the cylinder head to ensure maximum flow at high RPM with larger turbochargers.

In addition, we utilize higher quality racing Carrillo connecting rods, forged CP pistons, cylinder head studs, high performance valve springs, cylinder head porting and lowered compression for increased flow and high boost.

Therefore, the Carbahn B58 engine has 0.5 less compression to optimize the engine for the increased boost.

The CarBahn engine is both stronger and less expensive than the BMW OEM factory engine. The B58 CarBahn engine is designed to improve the strength of your engine if you are tuning your car. Connecting rods are replaced with Carrillo forged racing rods. Pistons are CP forged racing pistons. The engine also comes with lowered compression, ported cylinder head and high-performance valve springs for ultra-high boost pressures. The engine is a complete overhaul with blue printing and balancing. This engine is designed for an increase in torque of 100% over stock.

Steve Dinan’s engine shop has been building racing engines for 43 years. Those engines have won many championships including three prototype racing championships including; 2 overall wins in the 24hrs of Daytona in 2011-2013. You will not find a higher quality engine.

  • CBS55-6001 – Crank Hub Kit for F8X M2C M2CS M3 M3C M3CS M4 M4C M4CS and M4GTS

CarBahn Crank Hub Kit replaces the Stock S55 Crank Hub, preventing the timing gear from slipping and causing damage to the engine.

The CarBahn Crank Hub Kit includes:

      • 1 – Keyed Crank Hub
      • 1 – Crank bolt
      • 4 – Drill Bits
      • 1 – Drill Bit Spacer
      • 1 – Drill Guide
      • 1 – Drill Guide Bolt

CarBahn has developed a Crank Hub Kit for the S55 Engine, designed to prevent the timing gear from slipping and spinning independently from the crank.

The Stock Crank Hub design allows the timing gear to spin independently from the crank causing the user to get the engine re-timed at a minimum and in worst case scenario cause piston to valve contact damaging the engine and requiring a complete engine overhaul.

CarBahn Crank Hub Kit is unique in that it has a two locking pins similar to a crankshaft keyway. The CarBahn pins is not in sheer and does not suffer from oscillations associated with most crank pins. This design has been used by CarBahn High Performance Engines and before that by Dinan since 2010 in both street and race engine applications with no failures.

Most aftermarket crank hubs have multiple pins that are in sheer. During major and minor harmonics associated with an internal combustion engine the crank hub will oscillate and cause excessive load on the pins in sheer. This can damage the pins resulting in failure over time. Steve Dinan has been building BMW race engines for over 40 years! This vast experience has led us to this design.

Crank Hub Kit uses modified BMW OEM sprockets keeping the metallurgical properties of the crank hub the same as the OEM BMW parts hence maintaining the durability same as the OEM part.

CarBahn VANOS Spring Plate Kit for E90/E92/E93 M3 S65 Engine.

The BMW S65 Engine can suffer VANOS Mechanism failure due to the plastic spring plate holding the VANOS Gear Mechanism becoming brittle over time and failing. This failure can lead to an engine failure and a very expensive engine rebuild. These VANOS Spring Plates are designed to address and fix the Plastic Spring plate issue by replacing it with a steel spring plate.

Contains 4x CarBahn VANOS Spring Plate

  • DC526-2460 – Valve Spring Kit S63 High Performance Valve Springs

    CarBahn solution

We include high performance valve springs with our engine, however you can purchase the springs separately. Our springs increase valve spring pressure by 20%. We also keep the steel retainers for long term durability.

Steve Dinan has been building racing and high performance road car engines for over 40 years. We are concerned about the trend in high performance valve springs on the new S63 engines. Companies are selling springs with very high spring rates that will rob power and dramatically increase valve train wear.

    Boosted engine

With a boosted engine you will need a slight increase in pressure to push back against the boost pressure in the intake trying to hold the valve open. This amount of pressure added is much less than the pressure to control the inertia of the valve train.

    Conclusion

If you double the boost pressure you do not need to double the spring pressure since only about 20% of the spring pressure is to control the boost pressure and 80% is to control the valve train mass. An additional 20% of valve spring pressure is all you need to run.
